FLOOD OF 2007

After more than a year of drought, northeastern Oklahoma experienced consistent heavy rains through the spring and into the summer.  Several factors including heavy rains in SE Kansas led to a near record flood in Miami on July 2-5, 2007.  The Neosho River reached a crest of 29 feet, its highest since 1951.  The Modoc Tribal office flooded between 4-5 feet, totally devastating the building.  Tribal employees had a day to prepare and were able to save computers and important documents.  Other items including other electronic equipment, and personal property were raised on top of tables that gave way when flood waters overtook them.  All furniture and file cabinets were lost.  Tribal employees have temporarily moved their offices to tribal buildings at the Red Cedar Recycling/Modoc Housing Complex on the truck route.  Tribal leaders will be making decisions regarding a future office location over the next few months.

No serious injuries were reported in the flood.
